HAPPY 2007 EVERYBODY, UNFORTUNATELY IT HASN'T BEEN FOR ME YET AS I HAVE BEEN SUFFERING BACK PROBLEMS FOR THE LAST 20 ODD YEARS AND NOW BEEN TOLD THAT MAYBE MY BIKING/TRIKING DAYS ARE NUMBERED. BIT OF A BUMMER OF A START TO 2007. I HAVE HAD A LOT OF SUPPORT FROM FRIENDS AND PEOPLE I DON'T EVEN KNOW FROM FORUMS THAT I AM A MEMBER OF, WHO HAVE ENCOURAGED ME TO CARRY ON AND NOT TO GIVE UP.
SO TODAY 16th Jan 2007...................................
I STARTED TO STRIP THE TRIKE DOWN AND WHEN I'VE GOT IT BACK TO BARE BONES I'LL START THE REBUILD.I AM GOING TO MAKE IT SO THAT WILL SUIT ME BETTER IN AS MUCH AS IT WILL HAVE COMFIER SEATS WITH FULL BACK SUPPORTS AND SUSPENSION.
TODAY (17 JAN 2007) ANOTHER COUPLE OF HOURS AND NEARLY ALL THE FRAMEWORK HAS BEEN REMOVED. ABOUT 12 MORE BOLTS TO REMOVE AND THE AXLE WILL ONLY BE ATTACHED TO THE BIKE WITH THE PROP SHAFT, THEN THE LITTLE MATTER OF CUTTING DOWN THE BIKE FRAME AROUND THE ENGINE AND MOUNTING A SMALL BOX TO HOUSE THE ELECTRICS.
ONE IDEA I HAD TO GET MORE ROOM BEHIND THE ENGINE WAS TO CUT SOME OF THE BIKE FRAME AWAY AND MOUNT A BOX ON THE REMAINING FRAME TO HOUSE THE ELECTRICS (SEE NEXT PHOTO).
HERE IS WHAT I THINK IT WILL LOOK LIKE.
OK, THIS MORNING I REMOVED THE TANK AND THEN DISCONNECTED ALL THE ELECTRICS WHICH WERE UNDER THE SEAT AREA AND TUCKED ALL THE CABLES ON TOP OF THE ENGINE FOR NOW WHILE I CUT AWAY PART OF THE FRAME THAT WASN'T NEEDED ANYMORE. AS YOU CAN SEE I LEFT A SHORT 3" STUMP OF FRAME STICKING UP ON EITHER SIDE AND THIS WAS FOR A GOOD REASON WHICH WILL ALL BECOME CLEAR LATER. NOW I HAVE TO FIND A SUITABLE BOX LARGE ENOUGH TO HOUSE ALL THE ELECTRICS BUT NOT TOO DEEP THAT IT WILL STICK OUT TOO FAR. SOMETHING 12"X12"X3" DEEP WOULD BE IDEAL. THIS WILL THEN BE MOUNTED ON THE REMAINING FRAME JUST BEHIND THE ENGINE (SEE PICTURE ABOVE).
LATER TODAY I SHOULD BE TAKING DELIVERY OF A LENGTH OF SCAFFOLD PIPE WHICH I'LL BE USING FOR THE SWINGING ARMS BUT WON'T BE STARTING THEM TILL MONDAY.
Right, the reason for leaving the 2 short stumps of frame is because I intend to slide another tube over this that is going to be the framework under the 2 seats (see picture)
My vision of what it should look like from the back.
The red box is the top box and the brown part above is the top part of the back seat. Black dotted lines are the frame that both seats sit on, with the front seat being slightly lower down than the back.
Well it's 6.00pm Sunday night and no sign of the scaffold bar that I was promised on Friday night. It's things like this that make the build take a lot longer than it should do.
Tomorrow morning I'll have a look around for a box to house the electrics in and hopefully have that fitted by the end of the day, then I can concentrate on taking the measurements for the seating frame. Once I have these I'll take them to a fabricators to be made up and welded.
Monday 22nd Jan. I found a mesh box today to house the electrics neatly behind the engine. It's a mesh letter tray from Staples £4.99. As you can see all the electrics have just fitted nicely and once the front has been made you won't be able to see them.
On this bottom picture you can see the thick red and black cables leading to the back, these go to the car battery that will be fitted later.
Ok, with the electrics vitually completed my next job is to make a start on the swinging arms. I'm going to be using 2 x 16mm rose joints screwed into the 2"diameter pipes at one end and the other end will be held onto the axle with a bracket. For those of you who are unsure of what a rose joint is, see picture below.
Rose Joints arrived today, bloody quick delivery as I only ordered them yesterday mid afternoon.
Piccy 1 shows the actual item
Piccy 2 are the details of the firm I got them from. If you need to get a couple just ask for Billy and he will advise you. Why can't all firms be like this??
Scaffold poles still not arrived so out with the yellow pages and look up local scaffolding companies (well actually just one company). Heywood Scaffolding just about 5 miles away supplied me with 2 x 4' lengths of galvanised scaffold pipe for £5.26 and I don't think I was robbed at that.
